Abstract

The work presented in this thesis deals with a theoretical and an experimental investigation of the dynamic behavior of liquid sloshing in partially filled rectangular tanks. The effects of different parameters on the free surface elevation, dynamic forces, dynamic overturning moments and damping ratio for baffled and unbaffled tanks are analyzed.
The contribution of the tank filling ratio, the tank aspect ratio, the excitation amplitude, excitation frequency, baffle shape, baffle size and baffle arrangements have been analyzed in details.
A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the liquid sloshing in the rectangular tank for transient and harmonic base excitation. A numerical model based on the finite difference method has been developed to solve the mathematical model for unbaffled tank and tank with thin and rigid vertical baffle in transient and forced modes near resonance.
A small-scale test rig for a rectangular tank-carrying structure is designed and constructed to measure the transient responses in time domain. The baffles are fitted to attenuate the lateral motion of the liquid Lower mounted and upper mounted vertical baffles of different heights and numbers are tested. Perforated lower mounted vertical baffles with holes of different sizes and number are considered. The damping ratio due to the horizontal baffle for different positions and numbers are compared with the results of the vertical baffle. Finally, the effect of a combination.
