المستخلص

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy in the body caused by pressure on the median nerve in front of
the wrist, it is most common in women of middle age and most commonly
affects the dominant hand (Klippel et aI., 1999).
The aim of this work was to study patients with idiopathic CTS as
regard:
1- Clinical manifestations
2- Motor and sensory conduction studies
3- Serum interleukin-1 ~
4- Correlation between electrophysiological findings and serum level of IL- 1B.
In the present study, sixty patients suffering from idiopathic CTS were
included, they were 31 females and 29 males, their ages ranged from 24 to
61 years. They were selected from outpatient clinic of Rheumatology and
Rehabilitation department, Faculty of medicine, Zagazig University. They
were divided clinically into four groups (classic, probable, possible and
Unlikely) according to Katz and Stirrat, (1990). They were also divided
according to neurophysiological classification into six grades depending on
severity (Bland, 2000). All secondary causes of CTS were excluded. Thirty
apparently healthy volunteers matching with our patients as regard age &
sex, underwent the same laboratory, radiological, immunological and
electrophysiological investigations and served as a control group.
