Abstract

This study aimed at assessment of certain psychosocial fiJctors as quality of life (QoL), stigma, and expressed emotions (EE) that could influence relapsing among non-hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. A retrospective case- control design was utilized in this study which conducted in psychiatric outpatient departments at El-Abassia Mental Hospital and Zagazig University Hospital. It included 120 patients with schizophrenia divided into a relapse
group of 60 patients who had at least two previous relapses during last year and their caregivers, and a control group of 60 patients with no such relapses, and their caregivers. The tools used for data collection were socio- demographic/medical data sheet, stigma questionnaire and QoL scale for patients, and socio-demographic! medical data sheet, stigma questionnaire, and Camberwell family interview for caregivers. Results revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the two groups in relation to dependency in activities of daily life, EE, and QoL. Most of patient in the non- relapse group had high QoL, and low stigma feelings in patients and their caregivers. There were statistically significant positive correlations between stigma feelings of patients and stigma feeling of caregivers and caregiver’s EE. Also there were statistically significant negative correlations between QOL, stigma feelings of patients and of caregivers, and caregiver’s EE. It is concluded that these psychosocial factors influence relapse of schizophrenia. Therefore patients need prevention and early recognition of relapse which produce additional burden and stress in all dimensions among patient and their caregivers. These need social support and psycho-education in order to be able to cope effectively with their mentally ill patient.
