Abstract

Colostomy defined as an opening made into the large bowel during surgery and the bowel is then brought through the abdominal wall onto the skin. This provides a new path for feces and flatus to exit the body. A colostomy is created various disorders of the large intestine such as inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, obstruction, diverticular disease, ischemia, or traumatic injury. Recently, there has been growing realization and awareness of Self- Care in relation to ostomy patient. Self-Care practice is the way through it people try to cope with illness and disability and one of the main means by which positive behavior is promoted. This study aim was to assess the self care practices among patients with colostomy. A descriptive study design was utilized to conduct the study. The study sample consisted of (45 patient) Conscious adult available throughout 6 months, from both sexes and with colostomy operation
(temporary or permanent) regardless of the indications of ostomy. The study was conducted at male and female surgical department and tumors
hospital at the Zagazig University Hospitals. Self care practices Ostomy
assessment tool consisted of 3 parts: - l) Patient interview questionnaire
sheet, and 2) General self care activities questionnaire sheet, 3) Specific Ostomy self care practices checklist. The results revealed the majority of colostomy occurs among men aged 50 years and more, illiterate or had primary education and from urban areas. The main cause of colostomy is
colorectal cancer. The majority of patients complained of nutritional,
bowel, comfort and sleep problems, psychological problems (fear,
depression, embarrassment, low self steam and body image), sexual
problems and difficulties during sexual relation due to stoma and pouch.
