Abstract

Group B streptococci (GBS) or Streptococcus agalactiae are members of the normal flora of the female genital tract. GBS normally colonizes the vagina in many women asymptomatically. This organism is now recognized to be an important cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world.
As GBS prevalence varies from place to place, the aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of GBS in pregnant women at EL –Shatby Maternity University Hospital by a rapid and easy method in order to generate local data that will inform the development of rational interventions for GBS infection and disease, this allow us find the most appropriate preventive strategy.
A total of 160 vaginal and rectal swabs were collected from women attending ANC clinic at EL –Shatby Maternity University Hospital, with a gestational age of 35 to 37 weeks, from 15/4/2010 to 15/7/2010.
Cotton swabs contaminated with vaginal and rectal fluid were transported to the laboratory daily. The collected swabs were inoculated into ready to use selective broth medium (LIM broth) for isolation and detection of group B streptococcus. The plates were incubated at 35-37°C under anaerobic condition for 24 hours.
Among the 160 women, the results of the culture were positive for GBS in 41 women (25.6%).
All isolates were sensitive to penicillin, cefotaxime and vancomycin. Resistance to clindamycin and erythromycin was found to 4.9% and 2.4%, respectively.
The results are indicating that the relatively high maternal GBS colonization rate in pregnant women warrants a routine screening and prophylactic treatment of the infected women.
