Abstract

Humeral shaft fractures represent 3% of all fractures, a significant number of these fractures require operative intervention. Current indications for operative fixation include high energy fracture pattern (comminuted, segmental), floating elbow injuries, bilateral fractures, open fractures, vascular or progressive neurologic injury, and multiply traumatized patients.Interlocking nails have been developed for the humerus after the wide spread enthusiasm for the tibial and femoral nails. These nails are biological means of fixation and mechanically stable, providing the optimum environment for fracture healing. The nail with distal threads was used in this work in the treatment of 30 patients with humeral shaft fractures. The mean age was 38.6. They were 20 males and 10 females. The right side was fractured in 17 cases and the left side in 13 patients. Twenty eight patients had closed fractures of the humeral shaft and 2 patients had open fractures (first degree). The commonest mechanism of injury was falling in 18 cases (60%); the next common mechanism of injury was the road traffic accidents in 9 cases (30%), and 3 cases due to pathological causes (10%).
