Abstract

Diarrhea is a leading cause of illness and death among children under 5 years of age in developing countries. Many factors, including socio-demographic, environmental and housing characteristics, affect the incidence of diarrhea. Infection diarrhea can be caused by many viruses, bacteria and parasites yet rotavirus appears to be the most common cause of diarrhea among children under the age of 5 years, accounting for one fourth of all cases.
Different interventional methods for controlling diarrheal diseases had been developed and applied by many developing countries including; promotion of hand washing practice, improving water sanitation, promotion of exclusive breast feeding, oral rehydration solution, cholera vaccination, rotavirus vaccination. These interventions had proven their efficacy in reducing mortality from diarrheal diseases among children.
Hand hygiene is a valuable way to help in fighting the spread of diseases, helping loosen and reduce the number of harmful microorganisms (germs), harmful bacteria and viruses and is an effective means of preventing diarrhea when done properly and on correct times.
The aim of this study is testing the effect of training of rural mothers on proper hand hygiene on reducing diarrheal episodes among their children in Alawya village, Sharkia Governorate.
Quazi experimental intervention study was carried out on mothers having children from 6 months up to 4 years. It was conducted during the period from January to April 2010, through a structural interview questionnaire that covers the socio-demographic characteristics of studied mothers such as age, education, occupation husband occupation and income.
