Abstract

The highway live loads specified by major international codes are presented in a simplified way to enable the bridges designers to have a complete idea about the requirements of these famous codes. A parametric study based on the Egyptian code EC45-94, is introduced to illustrate the effect of some essential parameters on the structural behavior of a typical bridge deck that has been used in many major
highway project in Egypt. General charts, based on the Egyptian code
EC45-93, are introduced to help the designers in predicting the straining actions caused by the live loads on the main girders of the bridge deck. The straining actions obtained as a result of solving the bridge deck under the effect of live loads specified by different codes are presented. The results are shown for different spans and spacings in a format that enables the ’designers to figure out the design values required for the preliminary design of the deck according to any of the chosen codes. Design aids that correlate the design values based on
the different codes to the Egyptian code EC45-93 are presented. These
design aids may be used to either compare or predict the straining
actions caused by applying the live loads of these codes on a bridge.
The worst ratios correlating the different codes and EC-45-93 are
presented to simplify the conversion between these codes. Major
observations on the differences between the major codes are illustrated.
