Abstract

This study was designed to determine the effect of probiotic feed supplement (Bactocel- Pediococcus acidilactici) on the general performance, hematological parameters, biochemical constituents of blood, immune response and evaluation of the degree of improvement of pathological lesions induced by E. coli following probiotic administration in broiler chicks. Three hundred-one day old broiler chicks were divided into four groups as follows: group (1); composed of (60) chicks fed on a balanced ration and considered as control, group (2); composed of (60) chicks fed on a balanced ration with probiotic supplementation at a rate of 1 kg/ton ration, group (3); composed of (90) chicks fed on a balanced ration and at the ih day of age, each chick was infected with 0.3 ml of E. coli suspension (1.5 xl 08 cfu/ml) via SIC injection, and group (4); composed of (90) chicks fed on a balanced ration with probiotic supplementation at a rate of 1 kg/ton ration and at the ih day of age, each chick was infected with 0.3 ml of E. coli suspension (1.5x lOll cfu/ml) via SIC injection. The experiment continued for (8) weeks during which weighing and collection of samples from each group were performed weekly. Results revealed that the probiotic used has the ability to reduce the adverse effect of E. coli infection through improvement of the chicken general health condition, reduction ’of severity of the clinical signs associated with E. coli infection, reduction of the mortality rate and increasing the body weight. Also, it has the ability to reduce the adverse clinicopathological and the histopathological changes associated with E. coli infection The probiotic has no effect on the humoral immunity but it enhanced the cellular immunity through the activation ofT-lymphocyte proliferation.
