Abstract To summarize the present study, several points had to be high-lightened: 1- There is a statistically improvement in the incidence of NIs by comparing the 2004 to 2009 Alexandria PICU study. (23% versus 9.7%, 64 episodes versus 28 episodes of NI) 2- There is an improvement in the percent of the mortality due to NI related to the total PICU admissions from 2004 to 2009 study reveals )12%versus 4.8%) 3- There is an improvement in the rate of device associated NIs from 2004 to 2009 (BSI: 18.7 versus 3/ 1000 device days, UTI: 25.5 versus 0/ 1000 device days). This is associated with neither improvement nor improvement to the VAP rates (10.9 versus 11.7/ 1000 ventilator days). 4- The change in the pathogen priority infecting different sites and appearance of new pathogens in 2009 (Acinitobacter and Enterococcus fecalis). 5- The presence of a new monster which is PDR (Acinitobacter) and the appearance of severe forms of MDR pathogens (Pseudomonas and Enterococcus fecalis). 6- The severe condition of the patient as explained by the high PIM2 score and the increased LOS were both still risk factors for acquiring NI. 7- Most of the incidence rates of NI, mortality from NIs , some device associated infections ratios are near to those reported by developed countries and far away better than those reported by developing countries. |
