Abstract

IC refers to all policies, procedures and activities, which aim to prevent or minimize the risk of transmission of infectious diseases from patient to patient, from patient to staff member and from staff member to patient. IC is a priority consideration in the dental practice. The cornerstone of IC is the use of standard precautions. Elements of infection control in dentistry include immunization, patients’ screening, hand hygiene, the use barrier techniques, management and disposal of dental waste, needle and sharp instrument safety, sterilization and disinfection of patient care items, environmental IC, general operatory asepsis and the personal health elements of an IC program.
DHCP should be equipped with requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes for good IC practices. Adherence to IC principles is the means by which DHCP can protect themselves and their patients. The HBM is based on the understanding that a person will take a health-related action if that person feels that a negative health condition can be avoided; has a positive expectation that by taking a recommended action, he/she will avoid a negative health condition; and believes that he/she can successfully take a recommended health action. Its components are perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action and self efficacy
