Abstract In this study 20 patients with displaced comminuted fractures of the distal radius treated during the period between January, 2009 and January 2011 at Ain Shams University Hospital. The period of follow up ranged from 6 to 18 months, average 9 months. The mean age of the patients was 52.2 years (range, 18-70 ys). The most commonly affected age group was between 60-69 years (30%). Dominant hand was affected in 12 patients (60%). Females were more affected than males (60%). The most common mechanism of injury was fall on outstretched hand (75%). Road traffic accidents was the second mechanism of injury (15%) in this study. Sixteen fractures (80%) were closed and only 4 fractures were open (puncture). Ulnar styloid fracture was seen I 8 cases (40%) Associated injuries were present in (10%) of cases and occurred only in cases of fall from a height and road traffic accidents. We used the AO classification described by Muller et al., (1988) because it is the most detailed one that includes all distal radial and ulnar fractures.( |
