Abstract

Three field experiments were carried out at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture , Assiut University , Assiut, during winter seasons of 2008/2009, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 to evaluate the growth, bulb characteristics and total yield per feddan in five garlic entries (four cultivars namely;(Balady, Chinease, Sids-40 and Egaseed-1 and one clone Egaseed-2).
The results of this study will be summarized as follow:
1- The obtained results showed considerable variation among all these garlic entries for all studied characters.
2- In all studied entries of garlic, the north side of the ridge showed better germination emergence than the south side. On the other hand, entries have a significant effect on total field emergence percent, in first and third seasons.
3- The highest percentage of germination was detected from Balady cultivar in all seasons of study. Egaseed-2 clone recorded the lowest values in the first and second seasons, while Egaseed-1 cultivar in the third season.
4- Marked differences were found among garlic entries for all vegetative growth characters. Maximum plant height, number of leaves per plant and whole plant weight were obtained at 135 days from planting, then decreased till 155 days. Average bulb weight recorded the maximum at 155 days from planting. Bulbing ratio decreased proportional with bulb age increase.
5- The used five garlic entries were significantly differed for all measured bulb characters, final plant stand percentage, yield and yield quality in all seasons of the study, except final stand percentage was insignificant in second season only.
Summary 44
6- Comparative performance of garlic entries indicated that the heaviest yield per feddan was produced by Sids-40 cultivar (as an average of the three seasons of study). Also, it had high average bulb weight, greatest average clove weight, lowest number of cloves per bulb and highest percentage of final plant stand percentage.
7- Significant or highly significant positive correlations were found among the yield and the average bulb weight, average clove weight and final plant stand percentage over the three growing seasons. On the contrary, the highly significant negative coloration was recorded between the yield and the average number of cloves/ bulb.
8- Results revealed that weight loss percentage was lower in the bulbs of Balady cultivar, followed by Sids-40 cultivar, in the two seasons of study, but differences were insignificant. The highest values of weight loss were obtained from bulbs of Egaseed-2 clone followed by Chinese and Egaseed-1 cultivars.
