Abstract

The aim of the present study was to to assess the effect ofa training programme to care for patients undergoing gastrointestinal tract surgical interference on the nurses’ knowiedge, attitude and performance.
The study was condcuted in the General Surgery Units (A,B and C) of Asiut University Hospital. It include 40 nurses.
Data were collected through using a constructed questionnaire, which comprised 33 questions covering the basic knowledge related to nurisng management of postoperative patients with gastroinetstinal surgery. The total score of the questionnaire was 84 points.
Assessment of the nurses’ performance was carried out through using the observation check list which included the nursing activities that should be provided to postoperative patinets with gastrointestinal sugery. The total score of the check list was 80 points.
Methods of teaching used during the program implementation were lectures, discusion, real objects and hand out. The program was evaluated by using the same tools used in the assessment phase then after 3 months’ follow up, another evaluation was done to evaluate the effect ofte implemented program on nurses’ knowledge and performance, p-values were used for the evaluation and comparison.
The educational program showed improvement in nurses’ knowledge and performance regarding the nursing care of postoeprative patients with gastrointestinal surgery. The results of comparison between the pre-, post-and the follow up tests showed statistically significant differences.
Nurses’ knowledge and performance were inadequate. No difference was found between the Diploma nurses’ knowledge and the knowledge of nurses holding a speciality in surgical nursing. Moreover, there was no relation between nurses knowledge and their experiences. In addition, there was no relation among nurses’ performance, their qualification and their experience.
Most of postoperative care for patients with gastrointestinal surgery was realized to be the physician’s responsibility, especially postoperative care.
Based on results of the present study, the following recommondations were stated:
1. Presence a clearly identified, well known and applicable job description.
2. A procedure book should be available to standardize the nursing care given to
the surgical patients and to identify the nursing staff responsibilities.
1. To develop an inservice education department for training nurses.
2. Nurses must actively participate in the clinical rounds ancishift reports should be done regularly.
3. To improve nurses’ performance in surgical units.
4. Encourage the nurses to improve and update their knowledge by reading.
