Abstract

Summary
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an extremely common and highly lethal condition that is a leading cause of death in all age groups. Progression from silent thrombosis in the legs to acute PE is believed to be responsible for 10% of all hospital deaths and, because it is possible to prevent thrombus formation in the legs, deaths from PE are considered preventable. In fact, PE is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in hospitalized patients.
This study was aimed to assess nurses’ knowledge and performance toward patients with pulmonary embolism. The study was conducted at Intensive Care Unit of the Chest Department at Assiut University Hospitals. The sample of the study consist of all available nurses (32) whom working in the Intensive Care Unit of the Chest Department. Tools were utilized for data collection was:
A. Interview questionnaire sheet which comprised questions covering the basic knowledge of nursing management to pulmonary embolic patient.
B. Observational checklist sheet which is related to assess nursing care given to pulmonary embolic patient.
Total Score of the questionnaire sheet was 100 degrees:
- Below 60% was regarded as unsatisfactory.
- 60% and above was regarded as satisfactory.
Total Score of the observational checklist sheet was 186 degrees:
- Below 60% was regarded as inadequate performance.
- 60% and above was regarded as adequate performance.
The statistical analysis was done using computer program SPSS ver.12, and data expressed as mean ± S.D, number (percentage) and ANOVA test. Chi-square test was used to determine significant difference for non parametric data.
The following results were obtained from study:
1. The majority of nurses’ age is < 20 years with a mean value (26.39 ± 9.42).
2. The nurses’ qualifications were diploma, technical institute and bachelor degree (90.6%, 3.1% and 6.3% respectively).
3. The study found that (56.3%) from the total number of the nurses were less than 5 years of experience and (43.7%) were more than 5 years of experience.
4. All of the nurses not attend to training courses for care of pulmonary embolic patient.
5. It was found that the majority of nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge (93.8%) and the majority of nurses had inadequate performance (90.6%) in relation to pulmonary embolic patient.
6. There was non significant difference between nurses’ knowledge and their performance.
7. The study also revealed that there was non significant difference between the nurses’ knowledge and years of experience.
8. The study showed that there was lack in the nurses’ knowledge and performance in relation to the qualification and years of experience.
