Abstract

Summary
Living with OCD patient requires a complex approach to many aspects of the disease, which is a chronic disorder. Aspects that have an impact on QoL of OCD patients includes individual related aspects as sex, age at onset, employment, level of education, social adjustment, and psychosocial well-being.
Aim of work:
 This work aimed to identify quality of life among patients with obsessive compulsive disorder.
Material and Methods:
 The present study included 60 OCD patients (28 females and 32 male) according to certain inclusion criteria, the patients attended the out patients psychiatric clinic of neuropsychiatry department in Assiut University Hospital, and the out patients of Assiut Mental Health Hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health and population (from October 2001 to August 2002). All patients gave oral consent to participate in the study after full explanation of the study purpose. Official permission obtained from the professional authority pilot study conducted on five patients determine the clarity of research tool. The research tool carried out through interviewing the patients on an individual basis by the researcher at the out patient clinics.
The Results:
 The results of the study show that more than two third (68.3%) of the OCD patients had high QoL and 31.7% of them had low QoL.
 No significant differences were detected between patient with early age (<20 year) and patients with late age (more than 40 year).
 Single patients have higher score than widowed and divorced in relation between quality of life domain and the obsessive compulsive disorder patients.
 Concerning the relation between clinical data, onset of disease, age, sex and the score of QOL domains, there are no statistical significant differences between the two groups with some exception for some domains.
 Regarding OCD perception on physical health domain 70% of the studied subjects ”always” able to ”perform personal hygiene”, while 6.7% of them are rarely ”wearing clothes without help” and ”rarely feels fatigue”.
 Related to OCD patients perception on the psychological health domain it was clear that 50% of the obsessive compulsive disordered patients ”always” ”enjoy life”. Only 18.3% of the OCD patient’s were rarely able to express their feelings.
 Regarding the obsessive compulsive disorder patients, it was revealed that 60% of studied patient always have pleasure time e.g., watching TV, doing exercises, hobbies. While only 6.7% of the patients report that their thoughts are rarely affect their work.
 As regards family relation domain, the results show that 60% of the studied patients ”always” fell warmth and comfort at their homes. While only 11.7% rarely have privacy at homes as reported by OCD patients
