Abstract

This study is considering a project evaluated by a steel manufacturing company that is studying one proposal to increase the production capacity of a steel production plant consisting of 4 electric arc furnaces (EAF), 3 continuous casting machines (CCM), one rod mill plant (RM)and one bar mill plant(BM).
The proposal is the addition of two ladle furnaces (LF) and one bar mill to the current system. Since this proposal is expensive and will include permanent change of the process, the simulation is used to estimate the total throughput of the current system and the proposal. The manufacturing stages are:
Electric arc furnace, continuous casting machine, storage, rolling (bar or rod). 10% of the production of the continuous casting is sold. Two cranes are used to transfer the steel from one stage to another.
This study will include be a brief description of similar studies done by the simulation in the steel industry sector, an explanation for the manufacturing process thoroughly, Specifications of the manufacturing stages and the expansion proposal. Also the simulation methodology will be described and the model formulation will be explained. The model building, calculation of some parameters like the warm up period will be discussed. Finally the results obtained by the models and a brief discussion and recommendations concerning the decision making process were introduced in the study.
The current system and the proposal were modeled by ProModel. The input data were analyzed by the Stat fit program, especially by the KS test, the model was validated according to the total throughput of both the model and the real system, and were compared statistically by the t-test.
The results shows that the expansion proposal will increase the total throughput by 39.3 % and will reduce the WIP of the Bar rolling mill in addition to the reduction of the time that the company will take to break even every year because of the increase of the profit due to the increase in the production capacity
