Abstract

This study was carried out at Assiut University Farms in the seasons of 1981—1983, in order to acc, nilate knowls±tea)xut the drought resistance and its ncd.e of inheritance in maize, the stability of yielding ability
• under sate droughtly conditions, the association between drought resist—
• ance and other aqronomic traits and the genetic system controlling grain yield of three populationsadapted and isolated from different locations havinc, semi—arid conditions in Upper Egypt.
Three selected populations from the areas of Upper Egypt, tiich re belevied that they have teen the rerrainder of the old Egyptian varieties, Nab El-Canal fran the New Valley, El—Balady from Beraban, located at the western rder, and El—Sabeeny from the eastern nrder of Edt u were used. These selections, with tvn cultivated varieties, the Arrerican Early and Ciza—2 were used to prcx3uce the 5 fictitious parents, the 10 F1 populations, the 10 F2 population prcuced from self ing, the 10 F2 populations produced from random mating and the 20 back-crosses.
The experirrental rpulations were evaluated at 8 environnnts in
vthich plants cre subjected to different water stress treatnents beside the control in tw different soil tyjs, the sandy and clay soil.
The significant results revealed that the populations gro’..’n for a tine in semi-arid areas of Upper Egypt tich suffered occasionally drought spells were characterized by nure drought resistance, earlier flo.ering, gmarleaf area, lighter dry matter per plant, shorter ears, higher seed setting under drought conditions and having the higher harvest mdcx than the twe cultivated varieties.
