Abstract
Patient teaching is a professional responsibility of nurses and one of their most important independent functions. By virtue of her professional license, a nurse has the right and duty to provide information a patient needs to maximize his/her chances of achieving restored health. In this study preoperative teaching is mainly directed towards two main complications that are likely to occur in the postoperative period is proper teaching is not done. Namely chest infection and deep venous thrombosis. So the aim of this study is to test the effect of operative teaching exercises for patients undergoing major abdominal operations on; patients rate of recovery and hospitalization period, the occurrence of chest infection and deep venous thrombosis to accomplish this aim of 60 patients were selected randomly from the surgical department of Assiut university hospital. The sample was divided equally into two groups a control group a study group. The control group who were to undergo scheduled operations were prepared in a usual way i.e. no special attempt was made.
