Abstract Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the cariostatic activities of gum Arabic versus sodium fluoride, on caries like enamel lesions; qualitatively using scanning electron microscopic examination, and quantitatively using EDX analysis and measurement of enamel micro-hardness. Thirty five sound non carious premolar teeth were collected, and hemi sectioned longitudinally. Control samples left untreated, demineralized sample were demineralized in a demineralizing solution and the de/remineralized sample were exposed to distilled water or sodium fluoride or gum Arabic in demineralization–remineralization cycles. Some of the samples were investigated by scanning electron microscope and the calcium surface content was investigated and the other samples tested for microhardness. The results of this study showed that the remineralization and microhardness of the enamel like lesions exposed to gum Arabic and NaF were increased were significantly greater than that of those exposed to DW. The surface calcium content of samples exposed to gum Arabic was significantly increased. |
