Abstract

A total number of 120 house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and 100 laughing doves (Streptopelia senegalensis) were examined bacteriologically for presence of Salmonellae, S. Typhimurium and S. Kentucky were isolated from 2 and 8 house sparrows respectively. While S. Typhimurium was isolated from 3 laughing doves. The experimental infection of 3 days old balady chicks with S. Kentucky (orally by using crop tube), resulted in lethargy, ruffled down, off food, huddling, DROPped wings, neurologic dysfunctions and diarrhea with 80% mortalities within one week. While in chicks infected with S. Typhimurium from house sparrows and laughing doves, clinical signs ranged from mild to completely absent, re-isolation of the inoculated serovars was possible after 3 days post inoculation. The comparison of S. Typhimurium isolates from house sparrows and laughing doves with a S. Typhimurium – local strain, isolated from chicken – by experimental infection of three days old chicks revealed moderate to severe clinical signs in S. Typhimurium –local strain of chicken – with 20% mortality within 7 days. In S. Kentucky infected chicks, histopathological examination of liver showed severe inflammatory changes characterized by severe congestion, massive leukocytic infiltration and hyperplasia of bile duct, while the intestine showed severe catarrhal enteritis. In S. Typhimurium – local strain, isolated from chicken – infected group, congestion of liver and cattahral enteritis were revealed.
