Abstract Summary Day surgery system is admitting and discharging patients on the same calendar day, those who do not require inpatient services, and are usually discharged between one and six hours following the surgery .This advantage for day surgery system leads to effective bed utilization through out saving bed days. The aim of current study was to assess the day surgery system and its relation to the effective bed utilization at the general surgical departments. The study involved 50 staff surgeons working in five surgical units, and with at least two years experience, 2500 patients records who had been all admitted throughout the previous year (2003/2004) in five surgical units, and 500 patients admission through three months in five surgical units at Mansoura University Hospitals. Data were collected by the following tools :- 1) Ambulatory Surgery Implementation Appropriateness Opinionnaire (surgeons opinionnaire). 42) Patient’s Length of Stay ( P .L.O.S) auditing form. 43) Patient monitoring form (A.E.P). A pilot study was carried out to test the study tools, and accordingly necessary modifications were done. It also had helped in estimating the time needed for each tool. |
