Abstract

Leadership style is the cornerstone of the success or failure of leadership process. It is the manner
and approach which the leader follow to direct and motivate employees. Effective leadership style
should be focused on the employees’ need to be empowered and satisfied with their jobs.
Empowerment occurs when leaders manage their staff in ways promote their personal and professional
growth; job satisfaction is the positive attitude of employees towards their jobs. Across sectional
analytic study aimed to investigate the relationship between head nurses leadership styles and their
staff nurses empowerment and job satisfaction. The study was conduct~d at Port-Said; EI-Nasr and
Port-Fouad general hospitals and the sample composed of 46 head nurses and 187 staff nurses. Data
were collected thmugh three structured questionnaires, which were divided in two parts,’ the first part
of each questionnaire aimed to collect personal data. The second part of tool one aimed to determine
the leadership style of head nurses, while the second part of tool two aimed to identify the staff nurses’
level of empowerment. Moreover, the second part in tool three aimed to identify the level of job
satisfaction among those nurses. Results of the present study revealed that the majority of head nurses
lollowed mixed style of leadership, less than one third of nurses were empowered, and less than one
fourth of them were satisfied. Findings revealed also that job satisfaction was positively correlated with
job empowerment. However, no significant relationship was found between leadership style, job
empowerment and job satisfaction. According to these results, the researcher recommended that,
leadership, empowerment, and job satisfaction, as a managerial skills, should be included in
undergraduate and post-graduate curriculum. The new employed orientation progra111 must be
designed to cover work standards, policies, procedures and job description as well as leadersh ip skills.
Finally, in-services and continuoLIS education and programs regarding leadership and empowerment
must be provided to head nurses and staff nurses.
