Abstract

This study was conducted to study the profile of elderly abuse among elderly people
living in geriatric homes in Port-Said city and to evaluate the impact of an awareness
program for geriatric homes personnel about elderly abuse and residents ’ rights. The study
was carried out at all geriatric homes in Port Said city ”Three geriatric homes”. The sample
was composed of 92 residents and 26 personnel at geriatric homes. The tools (elder abuse
assessment form, A structured interview sheet for the elderly, A structured interview sheet
for geriatric homes personnel, Resident’s rights assessment sheet and awareness program for
personnel). The majority of the geriatric homes residents in Port Said city suffered from one
or more form of abuse, the commonest was neglect, abandonment, financial exploitation, and
physical abuse and no sexual abuse was reported. the statistically significant relation were
detected between elder abuse and some of risk factors (sex, level of education, monthly
income, type of geriatric home, monthly fees, number of residents/room, duration of stay and
residents - fam ily relationship). There were statistically significant improvements of
personnel awareness regarding the residents’ rights and elder abuse. Given these foregoing
results, it is recommended to provide equal opportunities for geriatric home personnel to
attend training programs related to elderly abuse.
