Abstract

The aim of this work was to study the effect of L-glutamine and L-arginine enteral supplementation in reducing morbidity and mortality especially sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis in low birth weight infants. This study was carried out on 120 low birth weight infants. The incidence of sepsis was significantly higher in group 4 {non-supplemented group} than in supplemented groups {(group1) glutamine supplemented group}, {(group2) arginine supplemented group)} and {(group3) glutamine and arginine supplemented group}. The serum level of glutamine and arginine on days 7 and 14 (after supplementation) were significantly higher in group (1) (glutamine supplemented group), group (2) (arginine supplemented group) and group (3) (glutamine and arginine supplemented group) than in group 4 (non-supplemented group)
