Abstract
one of the main sources of atmospheric polution with radioa
ctive nuclides is uranium-238
radon-222 is the only element in the uranium decay series
which is a gas it reaches the atmospheric air
by diffusion through the pores of rocks and soil
the sequence of disintigrations of each atom of radon
through the stages represent-ed by its short-lived decay products
or radon daughters can be represented schematically
because of the very short mean life of ra c, its activity
is taken at all times as equal to the activity of its parent ra c
because radon and its decay products are energetic ox -emitte-
rsthey have considerable health significance
the radon decay pr-oducts are condensed on all surfaces including
the surface of air-borne particles and this produces radioactive aerosols in the atmo-sphere.
