Abstract

Various soil reinforcement techniques have been developed and implemented to improve soil characteristics. A short fiber is one of those techniques, but little information have been reported on using this technique Knowing the behaviour of randomly reinforced soil by fibers under compression is very important to gain maximwll benefit from this type of soil reinforcement.
The mall1 objective of this research is studying the behaviour of reinforced sand with randomly distributed discrete short fibers.
Expcrilllclllill work progl’illll incllldes) 04 Shear hox~ 84 Triaxial, 16 CUR, and 10 COlllpactiOll tests have been carried out on three types of sand to study the I.influcncc or various paramcters such as reinforcing ratio, relative density of sand, fiber aspect ratio, and vertical pressure on sand reinforced by libel’s.
Thc results showed that thc use of randomly distributed discretc short fibers in sands to some limiting content produces a relatively stronger conlposilC Ill:llcri:tl :lnd illso inLTe;I~;Cs thc ductility, the ultinlate strcngth :llld the axial strain of sand at 1~lilure specially with line sand. Strength increasing was generally proportional to the amount of reinforcement and fiber aspect - rjltin. Thc strcngthcning actiull or thc Irbers is due to thc slrcss transfer
mechanism between the soil particles and the fIbers relies upon the surface friction between them and spreading of fibers in sand.
