Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency has been related to a higher incidence of asthma in children, and also to the severity of the condition , the greater the deficiency, the worse the condition. (Brehm et al., 2009) They found that 28% of the children with asthma had vitamin D deficiency .Vitamin D levels of less than 30 ng/ml, which is clearly a deficiency state .
High Vit D levels are associated with better lung function, less airway hyper responsiveness and improved glucocorticoid response. (Sutherland et al.,2010).
In present study we aimed to study the association between childhood asthma and serum vit D level .
The study was conducted on 80 simple randomly selected children, aged above 4 years to 13 years, fifty patients were suffering from bronchial asthma and thirty were healthy, age and sex matched children taken as a control group.
All children included in this study were subjected to complete history, clinical examination and Laboratory investigation. Detection of serum vit D levels were done.
We had the following results:
• No significant difference between patients and controls as regard age, sex and residence distribution, family size and family history of atopy .
• There was a significant difference between patients and controls as regard eosinophilic count and no significant as regard HB level.
• Mean of serum vit D level for cases was 67.04 nmol/l,
While in controls was 99.7 nmol/l.
• Asthmatic children with vit D deficiency were 42% while control group with vit D deficiency were (16.7%) .
• Among asthmatic children with vit D deficiency 76.2% had eosinophilia, while asthmatic children with vit D insufficiency 25% had eosinophilia and no one with sufficient vit D had eosinophilia.
• In asthmatic children with vit D deficiency 57.1% had sever persistent asthma and 42.9% had moderate persistent asthma .
• In asthmatic children with vit D insufficiency 12.5% had sever persistent asthma ,62.5% had moderate persistent asthma and 25% had mild persistent asthma.
• Asthmatic children with vit D sufficiency 4.1% had moderate persistent asthma, 33.3% had mild persistent asthma and 61.9% had intermittent asthma.
• Asthmatic children with vit D deficiency and taking ICS were 57.1% while in vit D insufficiency were 12.5% and no one with vit D sufficiency was taking ICS therapy.
• We concluded that most of asthmatic children had vit D deficiency .
• Most of asthmatic children with vit D deficiency had eosinophilia , sever asthma degree and all were taking ICS therapy.
• We recommended further studies to evaluate the role of vit
D in the etiology of asthma, asthma degree and treatment .

Conclusions
Besides other well-known vitamin D deficiencies, such as rickets, renal failure and osteoporosis, it is importent to determine role of vit D in bronchial asthma.
We concluded that most of asthmatic children weren’t exposed well to the sun and spend more time in doors, they also didn’t eat fish which is a good source of vit D . So the mean of serum vit D level in asthmatic children was less than that in control group and vit D deficiency was more in athma group.
Asthmatic children with vit D deficiency were characterized by the following : most of them had eosinophilia ,degree of asthma severity was moderate and sever persistent asthma and all of them were taking ICS therapy.
