Abstract The present study succeeded to reveal certain ecological aspects 10f rodents and their ectoparasites in the mud and semi-arid cultivated areas in Assiut Governorate. A special stress was laid on the economic losses and assessment of rodent control using the traditional cheap quick acting rodenticide zincphosphide in different crops and sugarcane plantations. For the first time in Egypt,an attent to evaluate ultra-sonic wnves for control of rodent infestation was successfully conducted and evaluated. These trials were preceded by an introduction and review of literature. Materials and methods for every item were given. The results were tabulated, figured, statistically ana lysed and discussed and finally entailed with a general discussion. The rodent population in the semi-arid cultivated area ccmprisedofRcttta6 ,cizttao atexancfrtnwo (44.36%), Ce*bdfao species (38.46%), R.tttg4 itattu.o Jtauo’cu.4 (15.38%) and AkvZcErnthLo nZfaticaa (1.79%) in addition to few catches of desert rodents such as Jaeafu4 jaeu1u4 and Mvz104e4 4hOWi. Study of the population dynamics showed that these rodents attained their highen densities during Spring and Autumn and DROPped markedly in winter. As revealed by monthly fluctuations two peaks were recorded, one in March and April end the second in September. The lowest density was recorded in December, January and Febraury probably affected by the prevailing climatic condition. Other factors including the type of food and its abundace were prpbably in 8ctiofl. In the cultivated mud area MUiCtvlthi4 nLttititu4 was the most predominant species. It was found to burrow at the borders of fields near irrigation canals. Its population dynamics revealed two peaks: one in June and another in Septenber. The lowest density was recorded in January. |
