Abstract
The text of the work presented in this thesis lies in three
sections.
Section 1: Synthesis of thermotropic liquid crystalline
poly(arylidene – ether )s containing 4-tertiary butyl
cyclohexanone moiety linked with polymethylene spacers.
The monomers namely: 4,4`-diformyl-α,ω-
diphenoxyalkanes 10a-f and 4,4`-diformyl-2,2`- dimethoxy-α,ω-
diphenoxyalkanes 11a-f were prepared by interaction of one mole
of dihaloalkanes with two moles of the sodium salt of, 4-
hydroxybenzaldehyde or 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde
respectively in DMF.
