Abstract

The study of geriatric intoxication has become more important nowadays. One quarter of the world’s population are now over the age of 60. The incidence of intoxication increases in this age group due to multiple factors as failing health, loss of independence and polypharmacy. In addition, their presentation may be delayed and the presenting symptoms and signs may be atypical.
The current study was a cross-sectional hospital-based observational study, performed on geriatric patients presented to the PCC of Ain Shams University hospitals during the period from December 2009 to December 2010. It aimed at demonstrating the pattern of poisoning in the elderly, and to review and analyze data about poisoning in this age group collected from literature.
In each patient the following data were obtained:
I- Sociodemographic data:
II- Medical evaluation:
Including the patient’s medical data and the poisoning circumstances.
III- Investigational parameters:
IV- Treatment:
V- Fate:
VI- Criteria of severity:
assessed at the time of peak manifestations according to the Poisoning Severity Score (PSS) of European Association of Poisons Centers and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT) and finally, the PSS was correlated with the patient’s data to highlight various risk factors affecting the severity of poisoning in this specific age group.
By the end of the study, the recorded clinical data of all the studied patients were tabulated for statistical analysis.
