Abstract The main objective of this thesis is to supply both electrical power and potable water through a proposed desalination supply vessel. Fresh water produced will be used for drinking, cleaning and washing purposes contributing to the high demand consumption particularly on board ships. The main idea for proposed vessel is to use the renewable energy to produce both power and fresh water which is the main problem. The fresh water generator incorporated in the ship propulsion plant will result in better exploiting the waste heat carried out by cooling water or scavenging air and hence the plant overall efficiency will increase. Frequently a sufficient potable water supply in arid coastal regions can only be ensured by operating seawater desalination plants. If consumers of potable water in such regions are located far away from each other, either many small or few large land-based seawater desalination plants with correspondingly extensive distribution networks are needed, both of which require large investments. For these and other applications, a mobile floating seawater desalination plant installed on a ship can offer a useful and economic alternative to conventional land-based plants. The mobile seawater desalination plant can serve one or several consumers. The potable water produced on the ship is pumped into storage tanks on the coast via pipelines and is then pumped into the distribution networks supplying the potable water to the consumers. Substantial work has been carried out to date on utilizing waste heat from various processes for desalination; numerous systems involving the utilization of waste heat for desalination of seawater have been proposed and implemented during the last two decades. Defining and mentioning the various sources of waste heat could lead to a better understanding of the utilization of waste heat. The desalination supply vessel can offer a useful and economic alternative to conventional desalination plants for the Saudi areas applications. So, in this thesis the possibilities of using renewable energy and fuel cell in order to reach to the optimum use of energy on board ships are discussed. This principle has been applied in floating desalination ships as a case study of using renewable energy in marine field. |
