Abstract

-Upper GI bleeding (UGIB) is an important and common medical emergency that requires admission to hospital for urgent diagnosis and management. The condition results in high mortality and medical care costs. During the last decades variceal bleeding is reported to be the commonest cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in Egypt. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the etiology and outcome of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients admitted to Suez Canal University Hospital during the period from 2004 to 2008.
This retrospective study included 811 patients with acute upper GI bleeding, their mean ages was 51.44 ± 15.51 and 81.8% were above 40 years. The majority of patients were males (68.4%) and 55.9% were living in rural areas. Of 626 patients, 12.5% were smokers. Of all patients, 41.2% presented with both hematemesis and melena while 34.5% presented by hematemesis and 21.3% presented with melena. On admission, disturbed level of consciousness was found in 9.7% of patients, 30.9% of patients were hemodynamically unstable and only 12% had history of NSAIDs intake. .As regarding the laboratory findings, most of them were anemic (87.4%), hypoalbuminemic (79.9%) and 83.2% had INR >1.2. Among 253 patients with evidence of CLD, 53.3% had Child B.
