Abstract

Traffic volumes increase is a major problem in Greater Cairo Region that leads
to more congestions, increase in delay time, and increase in air and noise pollution. To
solve this problem, new roadway infrastructures and traffic management systems are
normally implemented. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have many applications as
part of the traffic management systems. Variable Message Signs (VMS) Systems, one
of the ITS applications, can be used to make a better use of the already available road
infrastructure. VMS can be used for many objectives, but its main use in Greater
Cairo ~egion would be to reduce the amount of vehicular delays due to incidents on
the main road network.
The aim of this study is to introduce the different applications of Intelligent
Transport Systems (ITS), with emphasis on the application of VMS by identifying its
requirements and capabilities. In addition, this thesis reports the economic feasibility
of applying VMS system on a chosen route in Greater Cairo Region, as part of
~, transport projects evaluation process.
The main routes 111 Greater Cairo road network were identified for VMS
application with the suggestion of VMS locations for each road and the messages
displayed on the sign boards. 6th of October elevated road was selected as a case study
for detailed analysis for applying VMS system. This thesis relied on the data obtained
from the General Directorate of Traffic. A feasibility study was carried out to
determine the expected economic rate of return due to the application of VMS system
in Greater Cairo Region.
After data analysis and feasibility study, conclusions were obtained and
recommendations were introduced for further studies
