Abstract

Gbril Abd Allah Mohamed Abd Allah: Studies on Some Factors Affecting the Quality of Strawberry Transplants During Cold Storage. Unpublished Ph.D. Thesis, Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, 2009.
Three experiment were conducted in 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 to study the effect of some pre cold storage factors on the quality and productivity of strawberry transplants i.e., transplants size (crown diameter) in three categories , large (> 1.2 cm.), medium (0.8-1.2 cm) and small transplants (< 0.8 cm) in the first experiment, the time between the last irrigation time and lifting the transplants from nursery (2, 1 and on lifting day) in the second experiment, and two factors in the third experiment , packaging filling method ( loose or bundled ) and package top space ( 0 , 5 , 10 cm. and wooden box).
Montakhab cv. strawberry transplants were lifted from the nursery 15 and 20th of January in the first and second seasons respectively and stored at the same day till transplanting date, samples from the experiments were randomly selected before and after the storage. Transplants after storage were planted in the field (El Nubaryah sector – El Behyra governorat)
The obtained results from the first experiment revealed that the large transplants (> 1.2 cm crown diameter) resulted in the highest values for all of the studied characteristics followed by the medium transplants (0.8 – 1.2 cm), while the lowest values obtained by the small transplant crown size (< 0.8 cm).
Data resulted from the second experiment showed that the highest values were obtained from the transplants which irrigated 2 days before lifting while the lowest values were obtained from the transplants supplied with water on the lifting day.
Filling the package with loose transplants was better than filling it with bundled transplants. In addition, package top space indicated that10cm top space resulted in the highest values in most of the characteristics. On the other hand, 0 cm package top space showed the lowest values.
In general, the lowest decayed transplants percentage, the highest stand percentage, strong vegetative growth, large early and total yield were obtained by the large transplants, irrigation the transplants 2 days before lifting, transplants filling loosely and 10 cm package top space.
