Abstract

Salivary gland tumours are uncommon and their microscopical features can be complex. There have been several attempts at their classification. The most recent classification is the WHO classification released in 2005. Moreover, the prognosis of salivary gland tumours is influenced by several factors and our understanding of them is improving with ongoing research.
It is important to study the epidemiology of these rare neoplasms for a better understanding of their clinical characteristics and behavior. Reports from several parts of the world have shown variations in the incidence of salivary gland tumours as well as variations in the frequency of each histological type.
There are many studies of large series of salivary gland tumours in different countries around the world. Many studies have also been conducted in African countries and in the Middle East. However, in Egypt, epidemiological analysis of these tumours is very scarce.
Our aim was to study the various salivary gland tumours received in our setup in terms of their epidemiological characteristics and to compare our findings with other settings and with the international literature. This was accompanied by a thorough review of the literature regarding the various histopathological features of the different salivary gland tumours and their differential diagnoses.
