Abstract

Breast cancer ranks the first malignancy affecting females, contributing 30% of all female cancers.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that the levels of prostaglandins are greater in various cancers, including breast cancer and colon cancer, than in normal tissues. Cyclo-oxygenases 1 and 2(COX-1 and COX-2) are the key enzymes in prostaglandin biosynthesis.
Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is overexpressed in breast cancer and may have a role in regulating tumor growth via effects on angiogenesis, cell proliferation, or apoptosis.
So, we tried to evaluate COX-2 expression in breast cancer and reveal its correlation with clinicopathological data. This study was carried out on thirty seven cases of breast cancer obtained during the period between 2001 and 2006 from the pathology department, Faculty Of Medicine, Ain Shams University and Tanta Cancer Center.
Age of patients, size, site, grade of the tumor, intraductal component, lymph nodes status and pathologic type and diagnosis are obtained from the patients’ files. Estrogen and progesterone receptors status and HER2/neu data were available in most of the cases.
