Abstract
This study was conducted to measure the mortality rates of different liver diseases and their trend in Egypt over the period (1986-2005), and also to calculate the number of Years of Life lost (YLL) due to these diseases in Egypt over this period. The data are obtained from mortality records of both CAPMAS (for years 1986-1999) and NICHP of MOHP (for years 2000-2005). Census data are obtained from CAPMAS. For assessment and correction of completeness of death reporting the Brass Growth-Balance Method was used. The age adjusted death rates and proportionate mortality ratios for four major liver diseases were measured (hepatitis B virus infection, hepatitis C virus infection, liver cancer and liver cirrhosis). And also calculation of number of YLL due to these diseases was done over the period (1986-2005).
