Abstract In the current experiments, a study of the acute and systemic anti-inflammatory effects of Origanum majorana L. (O. majorana) and Artemisia herba alba (A. herba alba) ethanolic extracts has been investigated. Furthermore, their analgesic, anti-pyretic as well as their effects on liver and kidney (biochemically and histopathologically) were examined. The acute toxicity study (LD50) of both extracts revealed that O. majorana and A. herba alba ethanolic extracts are quietly safe. No mortalities were recorded and no abnormal symptoms appeared on rats of after oral administration of both extracts till 5 g/kg b.wt. Four main sets of experiments were performed. The first set was constructed in order to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects, whether acute or systemic. The acute anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated using the carrageenan induced rat paw oedema. Intraplantar injection of carrageenan resulted in a pronounced swelling and a significant increase in the paw volume. |
