Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the productivity of sweet basil cultivated in newly reclaimed land as well as estimate the effect of different organic fertilization levels and different organic fertilizers on growth yield and chemical composition of sweet basil oil in order to provide more applied information about the possibility of its cultivation in the newly reclaimed lands.
The work was carried out during the two successive seasons of 2004 and 2005 at Ali Mubarak Experimental Farm of Horticulturs Res.Inst.,El Nobaria ,Egypt.
The experiment was planned in complete randomized Blocks design with three Replications.
Thirteen following treatments were used in this study as follows:
1- Control.
2-Compost at 20m3/feddan.
3-Compost at 20m3/feddan. + humic acid (8 litre/fed.).
4-Compost at 20m3/feddan. + tea compost (9 litre/fed.).
5-Compost at 40m3/feddan.
6-Compost at 40m3/feddan. + humic acid (8 litre/fed.).
7-Compost at 40m3/feddan. + tea compost (9 litre/fed.).
8-Cattle manure at 20m3/feddan.
9-Cattle manure at 20m3/feddan. + humic acid (8 litre/fed.).
10- Cattle manure at 20m3/feddan. + tea compost (9 litre/fed.).
11-Cattle manure at 40m3/feddan.
12- Cattle manure at 40m3/feddan.+ humic acid (8 litre/fed.).
13- Cattle manure 40m3/feddan.+ tea compost (9 litre/fed.).
The main results can be summarized as follow:
1-Effects of organic fertilization on basil growth parameters:
a-Organic fertilization significantly affected most of growth parameters such as plant height ,No.of leaves / plant, and fresh dry weight of herb of plant and per plot .
b- The best treatment was compost at 40 m3 +tea compost at 9l/ feddan followed by cattle manure at 40m3 +tea compost at 9l/feddan while the lowest values were obtained with control plants .
c- Fresh and dry weights of herb /plant were significantly increased to the maximum values by adding compost at 40m3+tea compost at 9l/feddan in both seasons with mean values of 713.80,849.68 and 773.69 g/plant for fresh weight during the three cuts in the first season respectively while it recorded 112.72,149.74 and 147.41 g/plant as dry weights. The obtained data during the second season were 699.30 ,826.15 and 781.43 g/plant fresh weights in the three cuts respectively, while we obtained 112.29,147.87and 143.77g/plant dry weights in the three cuts respectively.
d- Organic fertilization, significantly increased yearly fresh and dry yield of herb per feddan compared with the control .
e- The maximum values of yearly fresh and dry yield of herb per feddan were obtained from the treatment of compost at 40 m3 +tea compost at 9l/feddan with mean values of 23.32and 33.31 ton fresh weight in the first and second seasons, respectively and 5.29 and 5.48 ton dry weight in the first and second seasons ,respectively.
2-Effect of organic fertilization on volatile oil:
a- Organic fertilization , significantly increased oil content (%) in sweet basil herb, the best treatment was compost at 40m3+tea compost 9l/feddan with mean with mean values of 0.28,0.28 and 0.29 % in the three cuts in the first season, respectively and 0.29,0.28and 0.28 % in the same harvests during the second one respectively.
b- Organic fertilization, significantly increased the essential oil yield/ plant (ml), the best treatment was using compost at 40 m3 + tea compost 9l/feddan.
c- Chemical composition of essential oil: Linalool was the mean component in basil oil composition followed By Methyl chavical and Eugenol , while other components such as ∞-pinene , ß- pinene and comphene constituent relatively were found in small percentages of the oil .The treatment of cattle manure at 20 m3 + tea compost at 9l/fedan produced the highest value of Linalool with 23.51% compared with the other treatments.
d- Organic fertilization treatments , significantly increased the oil yield
/feddan .The superior treatment was compost at 40 m3 +tea compost 9l/feddan,which produced 62.81and61.78liters in both seasons, respectively.
3-Effect of organic fertilization on chemical composition:
a- Organic fertilization increased total carbohydrates, chlorophyll a and b content in sweet basil tissues.
b- Organic fertilization increased N,P,K content in basil plant leaves, as well as Fe,Mn,Zn content (ppm) generally in sweet basil plant leaves.
