Abstract

One of the most important nursing functions is to administer medications safely. The process of administering medications is multidisciplinary, but the final check to ensure patient safety lies with the nurse. Furthermore, the process of medication administration takes many steps, and in any of them, the nurse may commit medication errors. Medication errors are any preventable events that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the health care professional, patient or consumer. This study aimed to assess medication administration practice for detecting medication errors. Cross-sectional direct-observation study of 50 nurses work in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, at child hospital Mansoura University. Two tools were used to collect data: 1) questionnaire interview sheet to assess nurses’ knowledge 2) observation check list to assess medication administration practice for detecting medication errors. The results of present study concluded that 80% of studied sample had unsatisfactory level of knowledge. As regards medication errors, the percent of total high errors was 91.2%. There was no statistical significant difference between nurses’ level of knowledge and their personal characteristics. There was statistical significant difference between total errors and some of personal characteristics of the observed nurses as experience and unit of work. And there was statistical significant difference between total errors and personal characteristics of patients as patient age & patient sex. This study recommended that education program should be conducted to improve nurses’ knowledge and performance in medication administration practice.
