Abstract

Studying the pattern of atherosclerosis in the extracranial and the intracranial vessels regarding the distribution and the severity in an Egyptian smple of non diabetic patients known to have significant IHD (stenosis >50% in at least one coronary) with no history of cerebrovascular stroke.
Methods: Forty four non diabetic patients with no past history of stroke presented to Ain-Shams University Hospitals and the Military Hospital of Maadi CCU’s were taken randomly. Lipid profile, fasting and postprandial serum blood sugar, waist circumference, ECG, basic echocardiography, recent coronary angiography, carotid duplex and transcranial Doppler were done for all patients.
Results: The intracranial atherosclerosis was more prevalent than the extracranial atherosclerosis in the Egyptian sample. Aging and hypertension were related more to intracranial atherosclerosis. While, the number of the affected atherosclerotic coronaries was related to the extracranial rather than the extracranial atherosclerosis.
Conclusion: Race plays an important role in distribution and severity of cerebrovascular atherosclerosis. Care should be given to hypertension control, IHD as important factors affecting cerebrovascular atherosclerosis.
