المستخلص

The study aimed to determine the competitive position of the Yemeni
banking system during the period 1996-2008 and identified difficulties and
obstacles that hinder increasing the competitiveness of that system. In addition,
it proposed the policies and methods needed to improve the efficiency and the
activity of the competitiveness of the Yemeni banking system by measuring the
levels of technical efficiency of local banks and comparing them with those
levels of efficiency achieved by the branches of foreign banks in Yemen. This
was done to determine the relative competitiveness of the Yemeni banking
system and to judge the readiness to face foreign competition, especially as
Yemen will join the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf
(CCASG) and the World Trade Organization.
The study used several methods to measure the efficiency and
competitiveness of the Yemeni banking system such as financial analysis
method and quantitative analysis method (standardized) to achieve the
objectives of the study.
Findings revealed that the banking market is characterized by a high
degree of concentration and the situation of monopolistic competition, as a
result of focusing most of the banking activities in a small number of banks in
Yemen.
Findings also showed that the Yemeni banking system had volatile
technical efficiency and do not reflect a particular trend during the period of
study. It was also obvious that the banking industry was characterized by
capital-intensive as a result of the technique used in the banking business and as
it is in the process of increasing size, in addition to the possibility of
replacement and exchange between the elements of production. Consequently,
it was confirmed that there are good opportunities to improve the productivity
of the banking system and to enhance its competitiveness by continuing to
expand training programs and to use modern methods in the banking work for
the purpose of performance development.
The study showed the negative impact of banking liberalization on the
competitive banking in Yemen through increasing the costs of operation. It was
also shown that the gradual liberalization banking is the most appropriate
options available to Yemeni banks.
The study recommended a series of recommendations aiming to
enhancing the competitiveness of the Yemeni banking system and to upgrade
the level of banking services to meet the openness, liberalization, and
competition facing foreign banks.
