Abstract This study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of intraumbilical injection of three uterotonics using Pipingas technique for management of retained placenta. This study was conducted in Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. The study included 30 women with retained placenta in the third stage of labour. They were subdivided into three groups (10 for each ), injected into their umbilical vein after clamping it by either of the following drugs: 1-20 IU oxytocin dissolved in 30 ml. saline or 2- Methergine 0.2 mg. dissolved in 30 ml. saline or 3-Misopristol 800 mg. dissolved in 30 ml. saline. There was no statistical difference between the three groups regarding maternal age, parity, previous abortion, previous D & C, gestational age, placental weight, cord length or the distance between catheter tip and placenta. There was no statistical difference between the three groups regarding fetal weight or fetal presenting part on day of delivery. The only variable which was significantly affected between the three groups was time of spontaneous placental separation after drug injection which was shortest in misopristol group, relatively longer in oxytocin group and longest in methergine group. The success rate was different in the three groups but it shows no significant statistical difference. The highest success rate was obtained in misopristol group while it was relatively lower in oxytocin group and lowest in methergine group. |
