Abstract

TMD is a collection term embracing a number of clinical problems involving the masticatory muscles, the TMJ, or both. Various studies have been conducted to elucidate the nature of TMD and its causes. However, it is still unclear whether malocclusion is a cause of or only a predisposing factor in TMD.
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of TMJ involvement in patients with deep bite and to compare the MRI findings obtained from the deep bite group with that obtained from the control group.
Twenty asymptomatic patients of both sexes and age range 15-40 years, having deep bite were selected for this study. All the selected cases were interviewed and were subjected to the following examination procedures:
• Detailed case history and thorough clinical examination.
• Lateral cephalometric radiographs to determine if they have deep bite.
• MRI examination in different planes for both joints at maximum mouth opening position and maximum intercuspation.
All MRI findings were grouped, tabulated and statistically analyzed using chi-square test.
Some association between deep bite and TMD signs were found as the incidence of MRI abnormalities in the TMJ is higher in deep bite patients than the rest of the population, yet the increased incidence did not reach the level of significance. Thus, this association cannot be considered unique or dominant in defining significant relation between deep bite and TMD in an asymptomatic population.
