Abstract

The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Children and adolescent obesity are associated with serious commorbidites including type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.
Adipose tissue is not considered as a fat depot but also a metabolically active and an endocrinal organ secreting a number of adipocytokines that regulate apetite, fat deposition and even insulin action, of these is adiponectin and leptin.
This work was carried out in the duration from April 2007 to August 2007 and included 50 overweight and obese adolescent girls recruited from the Obesity Clinic of Al Matarya Teaching Hospital, their ages ranged from 11 to 18 years with a mean of 15.06  2.2 and 30 lean healthy girls as a control group.
