Abstract

In the present research, an analytical model is introduced to study the
nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete sections subjected to axial
forces and bending moments. This model predicts the normal stress
distribution over the cross-section after considering compatibility and
equilibrium conditions!. Real stress-strain curves of concrete and
reinforcing steel are considered simultaneously in the analysis. Based on
finite-element method, an iterative procedure is proposed to carry out the
analysis. Consequently, axial and flexural rigidities of the cross-section
are obtained after reaching the equilibrium conditions.
Based on matrix structural analysis, the proposed cross-sectional model is
extended to the structural level in order to study the nonlinear behavior of
framed structures. A computer program (NARC - Nonlinear Analysis of
Reinforced Concrete structures) is written in order to carry out the
analysis and achieve the research goals. The program predicts normal
stress distribution on any cross-section, internal forces. deformed shapes
(displacements), and axial and flexural rigidities distributions on all
members of the frame. The obtained results from the proposed program
are verified by comparison with analytical and experimental data of the
published literature. good agreement is obtained indicating that the
proposed model can reasonably predict the actual response.
