Abstract

The area and the perimeter information have comprehensive fields of applications for individuals, decision makers, and scientists from different disciplines. However, both the area and the perimeter of the same spatial features in a GIS layers undergoes changes upon data conversion from vector to raster. These changes are controlled by various factors. These factors include the selected pixel sizes of the produced raster, the geometry and the orientation of the original vector polygons along with the rasterization process adopted by the raster GIS packages (Spatial Analyst Module of ArcGIS, IDRISI, and ERDAS IMAGINE) used for the rasterization process. The impact of these factors on the accuracy of the area and the perimeter calculation have been studied and assessed.
