Abstract The pipe distribution network of water supply system can comprise a major part of the capital cost of such schemes. In addition to the initial capital recovery cost there are continuous operating costs from pump operation. In the cost analysis of water–distribution schemes, there may exit numerous arrangements of pipe sizes within the network. However, the choice of the optimal arrangements should be based on reasonable economic considerations. In most of the studies concerning water-distribution systems supplied from pumped groundwater source, little is found about wells costs, optimal pumping rate and water return. However, in the present study computer simulation and mathematical optimization are adopted and based on two concepts; firstly determining the optimum (least cost) diameters of the water distribution networks and secondly optimization of the pumping rate from the ground water source. |
