Abstract The esophagus is a hollow, highly distensible muscular tube that extends from the pharynx to end at the orifice of the cardia of the stomach .There is many mechanisms that protect the esophagus against inflammation. The multilayer of squamous cells of mucosa that protects the underlying tissues and The lower esophageal sphincter that act as a valve to prevent back flow of gastric content into its lumen. Recently ,There has been an increase in the incidence of non reflux inflammatory conditions of esophagus .It could be explaind by increased number of peoples who are suffering from immune deficiency . The various types of non reflux inflammatory conditions of esophagus are associated with differing causative factors such as Infectious esophagitis which is most commonly in immunosuppressed host . There are many systemic diseases that can result in non reflux inflammation of esophagus. The esophagus may be targeted in eosinophilic gastroenteritis and accompany several skin disorders .Non reflux inflammation of esophagus may follow ingestion of caustic agent and some medications. Radiation esophagitis may occur with radiation treatment of cancers located in the chest. Sclerotherapy can cause necrosis of esophageal tissues. |
